What do you say about yourself?
When the priests and Levites asked John who he was, he had the option to take the glory, but he DID NOT. The first confession was “I am not the Messiah”, he also denied being Elijah:
“Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders[c] in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” 22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”-John 1:19-22
Let us think about how easy it would have been for John to at least take the credit and say he was Elijah. I mean, they both shared a rugged lifestyle. However, the question remains, what do you say about yourself?
Wait, I have an additional question: Is it important to know who you are/who you are not before you can fully know Jesus?
John spent the day explaining to the Pharisees who he was/was not.
- He was not Jesus
- He was not Elijah
- He was just the one in the wilderness telling people to live right
The next day, John saw Jesus and he know exactly who he was! “35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”- John 1:35-36. Once we realize who we are not, perhaps we will grow to understand who Jesus really is.
- I am not super woman, I cannot be everything for everyone (because I am merely moral), I am not a perfect woman, I do not hold all control.
- I am the daughter of an all-knowing God. I do believe in the Savior, Jesus, who has the whole world in his hands. I do trust Jesus to never leave nor forsake me. I do know that he is very near to the broken hearted. I do know that he gives me peace and has left me a comforter that intercedes for me when I am lost for words.
I could go on and on about who I am, or who I am not, but at the of the day, I AM NOTHING WITHOUT JESUS!
Father God I love you so much for just being you. Jesus we are asking that you help us recognize who we are not so we can accept who you are. We put down what the world has tried to tell us about ourselves and we pick up who you say we are. We know that you are our maker, and no one knows us better than you. We thank you for loving us in spite of us. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
